*******************************************************
Bugs fixed since 1.05r2
---------------------
- fixed many CSO bugs; it didn't work before, it does now. Uses user-
defined query timeout, handles large responses w/o blowing up.
- plugged memory leak created by using bookmark dialog box to initiate
a gopher query
New Features since 1.05r2
-----------------------
- none. this is a bugfix release, that's all.
Known bugs/deficiencies not addressed by this release
-----------------------------------------------------
- Still no default textfile-save directory. File dialog box is buggy.
Once again, you'll need to run gopher with the /INIT switch to update your
.REZ file.

*** PC Gopher II v1.05 Release Notes: 21 Aug 1992 ***
*******************************************************
Bugs fixed since 1.04
---------------------
- the bookmark file no longer grows every time it's used
New Features since 1.04
-----------------------
- the CSO support is much improved. See the manual for full
instructions
- there's yet another command line switch & environment variable: /G
and G_LOG. This'll let folks specify where they want the error log file
to be written, either with the command line switch:
C:\> GOPHER /L Z:\PATH\TO\FILE\FILENAME.EXT
or by setting the environment variable:
C:\> SET G_LOG=Z:\PATH\TO\FILE\FILENAME.EXT
C:\> GOPHER
Once again, you'll need to run gopher with the /INIT switch to update your
.REZ file.

*** PC Gopher II v1.04 Release Notes: 10 Aug 1992 ***
*******************************************************
Bugs fixed since 1.03
---------------------
- now saves configuration settings as well as old bookmarks
when running with the /INIT switch
- bookmark window pops up on the right side of the screen, instead
of right in the middle. Thanks to David S. Lapointe from San Antonio
for this one.
BE SURE TO RUN GOPHER WITH THE /INIT SWITCH THE FIRST TIME YOU USE
IT!

*** PC Gopher II v1.03 Release Notes: 6 Aug 1992 ***
*******************************************************
Bugs fixed since 1.02b
----------------------
- heap space overflow while looking at long dir listings fixed
- Gopher now restores the starting driver and directory properly on
exit
- if user opened two bookmark list viewers, the bookmark list could
get munged. Choosing "Open Bookmark List" now checks to see if there's
already an open window; if there is, it's brought to the foreground
- the bookmark list wasn't being written out to disk if the user quit
with an open bookmark list viewer
New Features since 1.02b
------------------------
- telnet session command string is now written to the log file GOPHER.LOG
after variable substitution; this may help in debuggin telnet session
problems
- if the user selects a telnet session, and memory is low, and error
message will pop up, allowing the user to continue or cancel the
session. Thanks to Dan Cummings at the U of MN for the idea.
- the REZGEN program is gone; to create a new resource file, run gopher
with the /INIT switch, like this:
C:\> GOPHER /INIT
- bookmarks are now stored in a separate file from config info; by
default, they're kept in GOPHER.BMK, in the same directory as GOPHER.EXE.
To specify a different file or path, use
C:\> SET G_BMK=C:\PATH\TO\FILE\FILENAME
or run gopher with the /B switch:
C:\> GOPHER /B C:\PATH\TO\FILE\FILENAME
IMPORTANT NOTE:
To save your old bookmarks, run gopher with /INIT in the same directory
as your old GOPHER.REZ file. If gopher sees this file, he'll look in it
to see if it contains bookmarks; if so, they will be stored in GOPHER.BMK
You may specify names for the old-style .REZ file and the new .BMK file
after the /INIT switch:
C:\> GOPHER /INIT MYOLD.REZ MYNEW.BMK
They MUST be in the proper order, or...well, it won't be pretty. It's
easiest to make sure that the old .REZ file is called GOPHER.REZ, and
just type
c:\> GOPHER /INIT
Any bookmarks in old copies of GOPHER.REZ will be ignored.
- minor fixes to menu text
- listbox type identifier for phonebooks changed from "<C>" to "<P>", since
everyone but us geeks call them "phone books", not "CSO servers"
Known bugs/deficiencies not addressed by this release
-----------------------------------------------------
Bugs:
- WAIS queries still aren't handled properly
- CSO support is still minimal

*** PC Gopher II v1.02b Release Notes: 12 June 1992 ***
*******************************************************
Bugs fixed since 1.01b
----------------------
- the infamous "getDispStr" error has been eliminated
- list box is always the selected item after a "Go Back",
regardless of whether the mouse or the keyboard was used to
poke the "Go Back" button
New Features since 1.01b
------------------------
- an item inspector ( in the file menu ); allows you to see
exactly what string is being sent, and which server and port
it's being sent to. This is very un-gopher-ish, but I like it...
- amended woeful lack of team-playership in the About... box
- added a help screen; to see it, type "GOPHER ?"
- tracked down a couple of "error #213" bugs, caused by trying to
run off the end of a list
- if telnet sessions were turned off, directories containing only
telnet items weren't handled properly. Fixed.
- I am now 32 years old.
- Paul Lindner, our UNIX Gopher Guru, is married. As of today.
( perhaps those last two items belong in the bug list...)
Known bugs/deficiencies not addressed by this release
-----------------------------------------------------
Bugs:
- one user has reported losing the mouse cursor after returning
from a telnet session. I haven't had any other reports of this,
and I haven't been able to find the problem. Oh, well...

*** PC Gopher II v1.01b Release Notes: 4 May 1992 ***
*****************************************************
Bugs fixed since 1.00b
----------------------
- bookmarks just plain didn't work; now they do
- various text glitches fixed:
* tabs are now expanded
* lines no longer sorted
* lines no longer truncated at 80 characters
* blank lines no longer stripped
- plugged a few memory leaks
- update to latest version of IBMTCP
Known bugs/deficiencies not addressed by this release
-----------------------------------------------------
Bugs:
- occasionally, gopher will present an error box stating "getDispStr:
bad type ID from server", and go into a loop from which there is no
escape except rebooting
- failed CSO searches produce a text window that truncates the
first character of each line
Deficienies:
- CSO support is pretty crude. No way for user to request list of
available fields from server, requested fields are hard-coded, formatting
of data is minimal
- issue of read-only .REZ file not addressed yet. some users have stated
a desire to have a read-only .REZ file for public installations; currently,
bookmarks are stored in the .REZ file, making read-only mode impractical
- PC Gopher II should look in . and PATH for .REZ, .OVR files
- PC Gopher II can only recognize gopher types identified by the characters
'0' through '9'
- There's STILL no documentation
Well, have fun...thanks for all of the suggestions and bug reports, too.
Keep 'em coming!

*** PC Gopher II v1.00b Release Notes: 9 April 1992 ***
*******************************************************
What's New
----------
1. Support for the Gopher <--> WAIS gateway. The default query
timeout has been adjusted upwards to 20 sec., since the WAIS
searches take a little longer.
2. Minimal support for CSO servers. See "To Do" for what's going
to happen with that.
3. Path to telnet application is now read from the environment.
User can define the entire string that's passed to the telnet
application.
4. Fully overlaid. Overlay buffer kept in EMS if available.
5. Directory cacheing. A cache of recently visited directories
is maintained; before doing a network transaction, PC Gopher II
will check this cache to see if a listing has been retrieved
recently. If so, it will just update the screen.
The cache currently holds the last five listings, and considers
them valid for five minutes. See "To Do" for planned enhancements.
What's Different
----------------
1. 90% of the dialog boxes are kept in a resource file called
( by default ) GOPHER.REZ. All preferences and settings, as
well as bookmarks, are stored in this file. You can specify
which file to use by:
a) setting the environment variable G_REZ to point to a file,
like this:
C:\> set G_REZ=C:\SOMEDIR\MYFILE.REZ
b) running gopher with the /R option, like this:
C:\> gopher /r C:\SOMEDIR\MYFILE.REZ
Note that you MUST include the space between the /r switch and the
filename! By default, PC Gopher II will try to use the file
GOPHER.REZ, in the directory that the .exe file lives in; also,
the command line parameter will override the environment variable
if you use both.
A utility is included called REZGEN.EXE. If you munge or lose the
resource file, this program will rebuild it for you. By default,
it creates GOPHER.REZ, but if you specify a filename, it'll use
that instead. To create a new resource file called FOO.FEE, you'd
run REZGEN like this:
C:\> rezgen foo.fee
2. By default, PC Gopher II will try to use the overlay file
GOPHER.OVR, in the directory that the .exe file lives in.
You can change this by:
a) setting the environment variable G_OVR to point to a file, like this:
C:\> set G_OVR=C:\SOMEDIR\MYFILE.OVR
b) running gopher with the /O option, like this:
C:\> gopher /o C:\SOMEDIR\MYFILE.OVR
Note that you MUST include the space between the /o switch and
the filename! Once again, the command line parameter will override
the environment variable if you use both.
3. In order to be able to use telnet, you MUST set an environment
variable called G_TEL. It should be set to the complete path
to the executable file, including the filename, and the parameters
you want to pass to the telnet program. At a minimum, you need to
include the symbols %a and %p as parameters; PC Gopher will replace
these with the address and port number of the machine it needs to
connect to.
So, for example, if the telnet program you're using was in the same
directory as gopher, C:\GOPHER, and it was called TELAPP.EXE, you'd
set G_TEL like this:
C:\> set G_TEL=C:\GOPHER\TELAPP.EXE %a %p
If your telnet program needs a "#" in front of the port number, you'd
set G_TEL like this:
C:\> set G_TEL=C:\GOPHER\TELAPP.EXE %a #%p
On my machine, the telnet application is called TELBIN.EXE. It
resides in C:\NCSA, and requires a "#" in front of the port number.
It also requires the complete path to its configuration file, CONFIG.TEL.
So, I set up the G_TEL environment variable like this:
C:\> set G_TEL=C:\NCSA\TELBIN.EXE -h C:\NCSA\CONFIG.TEL %a #%p
4. The "Bookmark" menu is gone. There is a new item in the File menu
called "Open Bookmark List". This will bring up the bookmark dialog
box, and allow you to add/delete bookmarks. There are no longer
multiple bookmark files. If you have a need for more than one bookmark
file, remember that bookmarks are stored in the resource file; just create
a new resource file and specify it either via the command line or the
G_REZ environment variable.
To Do
-----
1. New documentation! First on the list after I get back from California,
week after next.
2. Improve cacheing. User should be able to set a memory size for the
cache, rather than hardwiring it to hold a specific number of items;
timeout value should also be user-configurable. User should be able to
turn it off altogether if memory is tight. Maybe a disk-based cache
option, as well? It sounds yucky, but I think that reading a listing
off of the disk would still be faster than a network transaction over
a 9600 bps SLIP link...
3. Better CSO support. User should be able to request a list of
available fields from the server. A "Phone Book" to store CSO responses
in would be a nice addition (sort of like the bookmark dialog, but
double-clicking on a name would bring up the information associated
with the name).
4. FTP capability. We need to have this part of the protocol better
defined before much more can be done in this direction.
That's it...enjoy! Sorry this took so long...bug reports to the
usual place:
gopher@boombox.micro.umn.edu
This is a complete rewrite of the original client, so there's sure to be
lotsa' bugs...
